St. Joseph's Home and Nursery, earlier known as the Foundling Home, was established in1875 and is managed by the Daughters of the Cross of Liege, Belgium. Having a long history and shifts of location, the Sisters settled at the present site in 1913. St Joseph's Home and Nursery is the only Community of Women Religious in the Parish of St. Ignatius Church, Jacob Circle. In 1864, Bandra, St. Vincent's Foundling Home began to care for 50 poor women and children.
In 1875 St. Joseph's Foundling Home, Umerkhadi was begun by Sr. Lambertina with 3 Daughters of the Cross. This was considered as the beginning of the present St. Joseph's Home and Nursery, now at Agripada. Years of famine followed - 1877 to 1880 and cholera in 1890. St. Joseph's then shifted to Mazagoan, Mount Road in 1878 with classes up to Std. V and a Boarding. In 1893 the school included day scholars. In 1899 the School was recognized by the Govt. In 1900 Lady Boarders were accommodated.
In 1913 the Convent and School building of St. Joseph's Home and Nursery, Agripada, Byculla was founded. From 1921 onwards, infants were received into the Nursery. In 1923 domestic training classes for Std. V + was begun with the view to prepare them for jobs as domestic workers. In 1932 the school received government aid for classes IIII. In 1948 the first batch of SSC students appeared for their public examinations. St. Joseph's thus attained the status of High School. In 1966 the Technical School building was erected; Technical training for dropouts from the normal school was made available. In 1989 the Nursery was closed and in 1990 the Day Crèche was started mainly for children of domestic workers from the slums and for children from insecure homes.
In 2007 the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), was formed by the Government to deal with the problems of children. This Committee now took over the supervision and guidance of all homes for children.
